Symptoms of Insulin
Resistance/Diabetes Type II
The symptoms of insulin resistance and type II diabetes stem from the over all effects
of excess insulin and sugar in your system.
Excess Thirst and Urination
With excess sugar floating around in your blood, fluid gets pulled from your cells
making them less hydrated. This will increase your thirst. With increased fluid
consumption from the excessive thirst, you will obviously see an increase in urination.
However, increased urination does not just come from extra fluids. When your blood
sugar rises, your body eliminates some of the excess glucose (sugar) through your
urine by kidney filtration. This alone would increase urination regardless of water
Hunger and Sugar Cravings
As insulin resistance increases, less glucose gets into your cells therefore decreasing
your production of energy. As a result, your body will signal hunger in order for you to
eat more in an attempt to provide the needed energy for your cells. The same is said
for sugar cravings. You will see an increase in your craving for sugar because your
cells are not getting the sugar they need due to your insulin resistance.
Insulin resistance and Diabetes are among the leading causes of weight gain. When
you are insulin resistant, sugar tends to accumulate in your fat cells rather than be
used for energy. Overcoming insulin resistance is often required for those trying to
Fatigue and Brain Fog
As mentioned above, a decreased delivery of sugar to the cells decreases the
production of energy for your muscles. A decreased production of energy results in
the symptom of fatigue. Many insulin resistant patients feel groggy and tired all the
time. Remember though, if your body is tired, so is your brain! Both need energy to
work effectively and decreased energy production does not just affect your body.
Your brain needs energy too!
Insulin resistance and type II diabetes has a significant effect on your circulation. All
systems need proper blood flow and this includes your eyes. Blurred vision is a
common side effect of type II diabetes and insulin resistance. People with type II
diabetes are at a greater risk of glaucoma, cataracts, retinopathy and blindness due
to the increase pressure in the eye, a direct result of excessive sugar circulating in the
Decreased circulation will also affect the healing process. When your body is injured,
whether from a simple scrape, cut or bruise, proper blood flow is vital for proper
healing. Slow healing is a direct side effect of insulin resistance/type II diabetes. With
poor circulation you will see increased numbness and tingling in your extremities. This
is what they called diabetic neuropathy. This neuropathy is again a direct effect of
excessive sugar in the blood stream. The sensation of “burning” is a common
complaint in diabetic patients. Decreased sensation in the extremities, predominately
the feet, is a dangerous situation. Sores and cuts can easily become infected, as they
remain undetected due to the decreased sensation. If you suspect insulin
resistance/type II diabetes, keeping a close watch on your legs and feet are a must as
you work out the details of your illness.
